About this book

Srideep MukherjeeFew pages for you Dalit Life: Representations in Non-Dalit Postcolonial Drama As a discursive study of the representation of Dalit subjecthood in select postcolonial plays by non-Dalit playwrights, this volume interrogates both the exclusivist praxis of Dalit literary aesthetics, and the treatment of the marginal within the rhetoric of inclusive and tolerant nation-building. The author perceives postcolonial Indian drama as a field of broad social reflection, and resorts to Bhaba's formulation of the third space of enunciation as philosophy for deconstructing the fault lines of an essentially multicultural society. The plays foreground complex facets of Dalit-non Dalit interactions that are a reality within the space of the nation state. This challenges the assumption of Dalit subalternity as a homogeneous category, and brings to scrutiny the politics of representation across the categories of caste, class, and gender.
